Atlanta’s Veterans in Residence: The New Collaboration Between WeWork and Bunker Labs

As the City of Atlanta joins in the national honors and celebrations of our soldiers for Veterans Day, a new program designed for veteran-owned startups and businesses is underway.

Veterans in Residence is a collaboration between coworking giant WeWork and Bunker Labs, a national network of veteran entrepreneurs, that expanded to Atlanta this fall.

On Nov. 19, WeWork and Bunker Labs will host a kick-off event of Atlanta’s Veterans in Residence program and unveil its inaugural cohort as part of their monthly Bunker Brews speaker series.

The program is a “six-month startup incubator and leadership program that provides veteran and military family member entrepreneurs the community, business support and work space to help launch and grow their businesses,” according to the organization’s website. The incubator is currently active in 17 cities across the country and each cohort consists of 10 veterans.

Every cohort will have access to a community of more than 500 veteran and military family member CEOs, WeWork’s community of members and Bunker Labs’ community of more than 10,000 veteran entrepreneurs.

Each week, the cohort will meet in person as a “local tribe,” and once a month for its national masterclass series with founders, corporate leaders and other experts. The program will also work to organize monthly professional and social events at WeWork that combine the veteran and business communities.

In addition to partnering with Bunker Labs, WeWork has committed to hiring 1,500 veterans over the next five years and plans to support its member companies in hiring veterans. It’s unclear how the recent developments from the company — SoftBank’s recent $1.5 billion bailout and predictions of massive layoffs at the company — will impact these plans. The coworking giant also announced U.S. military veterans or U.S. military veteran-owned companies with fewer than 10 employees will be eligible for a partially sponsored space or private office for their first 12 months as a WeWork member.
