Meet Mike Steadman:
A 2010 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. While at the Naval Academy, Mike was introduced to the sport of boxing. As a member of the Navy Boxing Team, Mike won Three National Championships as light-heavyweight.
Mike’s relationships with his coach and teammates solidified his love for sport, creating an eternal bond for the sweet science. Upon graduation, he accepted a commission as an officer in the United States Marines. As Infantry Officer in the Marines, he deployed to Afghanistan, Japan, and the Philippines. In April of 2015, Mike left active duty, relocating to Newark to accept a directorship position at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School.
In October of 2016, Mike and his business partner, Gary Bloore, launched the IRONBOUND Boxing Academy, a nonprofit boxing gym located in the IRONBOUND neighborhood. The Academy provides free boxing training to inner-city youth and young adults, in an effort get them off the street and in a positive environment. In an effort to fund the program and others like it, Mike is in the process of launching a corporate health and wellness business in order to bridge the gap between the Newark business community and local Newark residents.
Newark, NJ has an unemployment rate of 7.8% with 37% of residents living below the poverty line. Newark residents hold fewer than a fifth of all jobs in the city, despite housing corporations like Audible, PSE&G, and Prudential. Unfortunately, for families living below the poverty line, outside of food and rent, little to no money is left for quality recreation, particularly the kind that interest inner-city youth. Through his health and wellness enterprise, he aims to help employees get fit, have fun, and support the local economy. His ultimate goal is to revitalize the Newark Economy by employing Newark teens and young adults and using proceeds to fund free recreational programs for Newark youth. In addition, his intent is to build mentorships between his corporate clients and Newark youth.
Meet Jennifer Barry:
The founder and CEO of Blooming Connections LLC, a veteran and military spouse owned and operated social media management company. She is a 2007 graduate of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point and served over six years as an Adjutant General Officer in the U.S. Army.
During her deployment to Afghanistan, she was in charge of a Female Engagement Team embedded with an Infantry Battalion. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering Psychology from USMA and a Master’s of Science degree in Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology. She is a proud Army spouse and has two children.
Meet Torie Fisher:
Enlisted in the United States Army in 2003 at the age of 18 years old, she deployed in early 2004 from her station in Wiesbaden, Germany to Iraq with the 1st Armored Division. After finishing active service Torie enlisted in the New Jersey National Guard and deployed as a Blackhawk Crew Chief with the 1-150th Air Assault in 2008.
After being introduced to the world of beer by a friend serving in her unit, Torie began the process of creating a business plan to open a brewery. She also began studying for the Certified Cicerone exam, the most prestigious certification in the beer community. In 2015, she passed the exam, becoming one of the very few Certified Cicerone’s in the country and the only one to own a brewery in the state in New Jersey.
Backward Flag Brewing opened in 2015. Backward Flag is 100% Veteran owned and operated as well as being a women owned company. In March of 2018, Torie established Arms 2 Artisans as the non-profit program of Backward Flag. Arms 2 Artisans transitions post 9/11 Veterans from military service to a career in the brewing industry through a paid fellowship program.
