True Spirit Crossfit is a CrossFit gym specializing in personal training in a small group setting. We help people from all walks of life, from teens to seniors get fit and strong so they can have an active and happy life.

Leslie Allen, CEO and Head Coach at True Spirit Crossfit, was always active as a kid, she tumbled and cartwheeled her way through childhood until learning to row on the Potomac River during high school. Rowing kept her occupied until she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1989 where she served as an aircraft firefighting and rescue specialist.

Leslie has been in the fitness industry since 1994. She started teaching aerobics and strength & conditioning classes in southern California after she completed 5 years on active duty in the Marines. She continued to teach fitness classes until she transferred to UC Davis where she was a competitive collegiate rower and at the ripe old age of 25, she was the ‘oldest’ person to ever compete on the UC Davis crew team.

She started CrossFit in 2010, acquiring her Level 1 Trainer status in 2011, the same year she began coaching CrossFit. Leslie is also a US Masters Olympic Weightlifting competitor and the 2012 American Masters Champion and former record holder in her age and weight class. Recently she finished second in the world in her division in the 2017 CrossFit LiftOff.

“Through Bunker Labs I have connected with other veterans who are both interested in my services and with whom I can collaborate. It is through Bunker Labs that I was able to compete and win this grant.”

Pitch Event

Ford Fund Pitch Competition at the Bozeman Muster, October 11, 2018

Intended use of prize as stated in 2018

“The $5000 prize money from Ford Fund will completely cover the cost of the Two Brain Business mentoring program I am joining. This program, specifically for small fitness businesses, will help keep me focused on strategies and tactics to help me make it past the 5 year mark. The program will help improve my business operations so I can scale up and serve more people in my community.”

Actual use of the prize money

“I used the grant to enroll in the Two Brain Business Incubator program. I finished that program in January and had terrific success. I increased my client base by 11, diversified my revenue stream and added 2 new programs that makeup 20% of my revenue. I learned how to do Facebook marketing and spent $350 with a 100% ROI and established a regular staff evaluation system and designed a program where they can be “Intrapreneurs” within my business by developing their own programs with my support.“

I have since moved into the next phase of mentorship, the Two Brain Business Growth, program. You can read more about the Incubator program here: https://twobrainbusiness.com/mentoring-process/

“Thank you so much to Ford Fund for supporting veteran entrepreneurs. Ford’s generosity will enable us to provide a life for ourselves and families by supporting the growth and development of our businesses.”
